Team-Based Learning (TBL) is an instructional strategy that arranges the classroom into smaller teams, and approaches instruction from a collaborative standpoint, where both individual and team achievement is expected, assessed, and rewarded. Students are held responsible for their individual work, but they also interact together as a team and are held responsible for the choices of the team as a whole. This fosters interpersonal skills and a sense of engagement and community that is often lacking in traditional group activities. Through an interactive demonstration, presenters will give an overview of both the theory and process of TBL in the classroom. We will share our experiences incorporating TBL in our math and science classrooms, and how we combined it with specific iPad apps to improve student participation, critical thinking, and academic success. Our focus will be on assessments and activities using TBL. We will demonstrate apps that promote team-based activities in the classroom, such as interactive digital whiteboards and online concept maps. We will also demonstrate websites and apps that are useful for assessing learning through individual and group quizzes, using digital “clickers” and other feedback tools. Some of the challenges of TBL stem from difficulties in assessing and weighting individual versus team assessment scores, as well as team creation and management issues. We will give our strategies for dealing with these challenges as well as open conversation for other ideas as we promote team effort during the session.
