Coding for the Core: Using the iPad to Develop Computational Thinking and Mathematical Practices

There is a growing need to prepare students for a work force with skills in STEM and in particular Computer Science (CS) skills. By 2018 there is an expected shortage of 230,000 STEM workers with more than 70 percent of those in CS. Students are often first exposed to CS in high school; however, not all high schools include a CS course. Furthermore, females and minority students are underrepresented in these courses. Researchers are proposing that earlier exposure to CS education at the K-8 level can help increase enrollment and lifetime engagement in CS for all students. While computer programming is of increasing importance itself, it also provides an opportunity to explore the application of a variety of mathematical concepts in an interactive and engaging manner. CCSS mathematical topics such as ratios & proportional relationships, linear equations, functions, statistics, & probability can find exciting applications in areas such as video game design and robotics. The Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework and the SAMR Model will be briefly discussed in reference to how they support this challenge of integrating technology and CS effectively into math instruction.
